Background
This short guide draws upon the experiences and lessons learned from the DataShift initiative’s engagement with government and other stakeholders in Kenya and Tanzania on the use of multiple sources of data to monitor progress on SDG 5 (gender equality), along with inputs from an A4SD (Action for Sustainable Development) event held during the 71st Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) this September. It provides an information about some of the main opportunities, challenges and strategies for civil society engagement with government on SDG monitoring and accountability.
What’s in the tool
The guide takes us through what are the main institutional opportunities (governmental institutions, UN) that CSOs can take into consideration when working on the SDGs. In addition to bilateral engagement with government and UN entities, it also touches on multi-stakeholder and sector-specific committees, working groups and civil society platforms that open up a space for advocating for wider SDG implementation process, as well as expert forums dedicated to specific issue areas, whether nationally or internationally.
After covering the most common barriers that civil society encounter while dealing with governments on SDG issues, the guide offers some possible approaches and alternatives when dealing with SDG monitoring and accountability.
