In 2010, CIVICUS spent significant effort to develop the organisation and enhance its ability to achieve its
strategic directions and, ultimately, its vision and mission. Specific activities in this area include:

•  Creating a 2011-12 Thematic Plan to better link CIVICUS' strategic directions with targets for the remainder
   of this strategy cycle.

•  Validating, refining and implementing the new Impact Planning and Learning Framework (IPLF) to support
the 2011 planning process and the work towards the strategic directions.

•  Conducting an organisational assessment on gender and diversity at CIVICUS which led to a staff training
session to sensitise and expose CIVICUS to Gender Analysis tools to be used in project planning and
   implementation.

•  Developing new policies including a Whistle Blower Protection Policy, an Off-site Working Policy and
Procedure, a Sexual Harassment Policy, a Child Protection Policy and a HIV/AIDS Workplace Policy.

•  Planning to reform the financial management function (to be implemented 2011-2012) to streamline work
   and increase efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

In addition to the above activities, CIVICUS undertook a complete renewal of the organisation's internal
structure in 2010. For more details, see the box 'An organisation renewed'.

An organisation renewed

In 2009, CIVICUS commenced a participatory renewal process with the goal of creating better synergies
among programmes and departments to better achieve its strategic directions, mission and vision.  This
process came to an end in July 2010 with the new structure taking effect in October 2010. CIVICUS is
now structured as a matrix with functional units and cross-cutting projects.

The structure is characterised by three departments, comprising Operations, Outreach and Research and
Policy, and an Organisation Coordination Office to assist in coordinating intra-organisation processes, planning
and knowledge-sharing as well as the work of the Secretary General.  Other exciting new features include a
Gender and Diversity Mainstreaming officer and a new strategy to strengthen our relationship with our members.
