As an alliance that is dedicated to promoting citizen action and strengthening civil society, CIVICUS
recognises the importance of enhancing the legitimacy, transparency and accountability of civil society
organisations and of leading by example through voluntarily adopting a code of conduct. In June 2006,
CIVICUS - together with 10 other leading international NGOs - became one of the first signatories to the
International NGO Accountability Charter (AC), thereby publicly undertaking commitments to progressively
apply all charter provisions to its policies, operations and programmes.

In early 2011, CIVICUS published its 2009-10 report within the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) framework for
the first time. This report highlights particular challenges in the area of CIVICUS' environmental awareness
and internal policy, as well as considerable room for improvement in engaging members and partners more
meaningfully in the planning and implementation of its activities. Nevertheless, the report, which received
broadly positive feedback from an independent review panel, suggests that CIVICUS is making a serious
commitment to its own internal accountability. This latest report, as well as CIVICUS` previous reports under
the Accountability Charter Interim process, can be viewed [
