A Diagnostic Study of Togolese Civil Society

The Civil Society Index for Togo was produced by the CIVICUS CSI and its country partners, Plan-Togo and Fédération des ONG au Togo (FONGTO). The Togolese Civil Society Diamond depicts a state of civil society facing a myriad of challenges considering its rather weak structure, existing in a disabling environment, promoting and practicing positive values to a limited extent and therefore having a minor capacity of impacting society at large.

The CSI in Togo has profiled a civil society that generally has to improve their structural aspects by communicating and sharing information, cooperating amongst themselves and establishing self-regulation mechanisms. Civil society's role as a watch dog vis-à-vis the state and the private sector needs to be strengthened and its potential for community action reinforced while investing in improving local levels of social capital and trust of the population in general.
