Transforming State-Society Relations: The challenge, dilemma and prospect of civil society in Taiwan

The research for this report was carried out by the Center for International NGO Studies (CINGOS) at National Sun Yat-Sen University, in cooperation with the National Youth Commission of the Executive Yuan, Republic of China. The report highlights the positive development of Taiwanese civil society since the arrival of democracy in the late 1980s. It also identified a set of challenges, such as the low involvement of citizens in civil society’s activities and a rather weak level of organization and infrastructure within the sector. CINGOS hopes that the results of the CSI study will be used by civil society, government and other stakeholders to identify and tackle the priority needs of the civic sector in the years to come.
