Civil Society in Nigeria: Contributing to Social Change

The CIVICUS Civil Society Index (CSI) project in Nigeria was implemented by Action Aid Nigeria and DevNet with the support from UNDP Nigeria. The Nigerian CSI diamond reveals that the civil society in Nigeria is moderate in terms of the elements that concern the environment dimension. The structure, values and impact dimensions have been identified as its strengths. The important role that civil society plays in creating and implementing public policies has been noted. Challenges that exist are mainly related to current democratic and development areas and these needs to be effectively met. This calls for the creation of programmes that address people’s needs rather than donor-driven ones. Although there is overwhelming evidence in public trust in CSOs, there is room for improvement in the cultivation of internal democratic governance practices and values; and increasing networking and information sharing with other CSOs
