An Assessment of Georgian Civil Society: Strong Commitment to Democratic Values in a Challenging Environment

The Civil Society Index Report for Georgia was produced by the CIVICUS Civil Society Index (CSI) and its country partner, the Centre for Training and Consultancy. Georgia implemented the Civil Society Index-Shortened Assessment Tool (CSI-SAT). The CSI-SAT project brought to light many new insights, with regards to the current state of civil society in Georgia. The findings and report seek to contribute to charting the way forward for civil society’s future progress.

The study found that the further development of civil society in Georgia will require a focus on structural issues, such as low levels of citizen participation and the weak organization of the sector. The lack of attention to poverty eradication and social justice is another important area of concern for civil society. Future efforts in these areas, together with an improvement of the political context, could lead to greater impact by civil society with regard to influencing public policy as well as meeting societal needs directly.
