An Efficient Civil Society Going Beyond its Weaknesses

The Civil Society Index assessment in Ecuador reveals a fragile and not quite well developed structure within a relatively unfavourable environment, while it and practices/promotes progressive values only to a very moderate extent. Considering this rather unfavourable framework the impact civil society exercises, although moderate, is surprisingly the strongest of the four dimensions. A strategy directed at strengthening Ecuador’s Civil Society needs to enable marginalised groups to play a more significant role within the sector. It should furthermore not only focus on fostering the sector’s increased financial independence and a better human resource base, but also improve civil society’s legitimacy. Within the rather challenging current environment of institutional collapse affecting the country this aim becomes particularly challenging.
