Deputy Managing Director, Transparency International (2010-2016) | Hungary
Mr. Marschall served as deputy managing director of Transparency International (TI) from 2010 to 2016. He joined TI’ s International Secretariat in Berlin in 1999 as an Executive Director for East- and Central Europe and Central Asia.
In 2004, he became the European and Central Asia director. Among many responsibilities, he oversaw TI’s work with the European Union and TI’s biannual International Anti-corruption Conference (IACC).
Prior to working for Transparency International, Mr. Marschall served as the first and founding Executive Director of CIVICUS from 1994-98. He was the member of the international Preparatory and Organizing Committee from 1991-93, that led to the creation of CIVICUS in 1993.
Between 1991 and 1994, Mr. Marschall was deputy mayor of Budapest. As a member of the first freely elected leadership of Budapest, he was in charge of arts, education, culture and tourism.
Mr. Marschall graduated from the then Karl Marx University of Economics in 1977 and holds a doctorate from the same university. As an early advocate of civil society in East- and Central Europe, he was a Fulbright fellow at Yale in 1988/89 studying the nonprofit sector in the US. Throughout his career, Mr. Marschall served on many international boards including ICNL, ECNL, GuideStar Europe, Accountable Now.
